Campo Novo do Parecis, in the state of Mato Grosso in west Brazil, is a good place to arrange an excursion to indigenous people who live in the surrounding Reservas Indígenas – Indian Reservations. The town's Secretaria de Turismo organises visits to Paresi Indian villages, among which Aldeia 4 Cachoeiras, Aldeia Rio Sacre and Ponte de Pedras.
The Paresi Indian Tribe of Aldeia Quatro Cachoeiras
Southwest of Campo Novo do Parecis lies the Paresi Indian Reservation, which is connected to the Utiariti Indian Reservation. The Village of Quatro Cachoeiras is led by the charismatic chief cacique Narciso. The village has entered the modern era, which is visible in the modern, wooden houses next to traditional ocas – huts made of palm leaves – as well as in their western dress. Traditional outfits are still used for ceremonies and events.
As the village name suggests, there are four waterfalls nearby which are within walking distance and flow down into the Rio Verde. The Rio Verde [Green River] is a playground for the Paresi children, a place for women to do laundry and a source of food for the entire village; the indigenous of this village catch their fish using small harpoons. Aldeia Quatro Cachoeiras does not levy an entrance fee but earns a living by selling handicrafts.
