With an eye on the current trends in Asia, the rest of the world is beginning to take notice of the fact that a transition to green transportation can meet the social and economic needs of urban areas in a way that is both environmentally sustainable and economically rewarding. Despite the argument that large investments are required, green transportation projects that have either been completed or are currently underway indicate they can provide a tremendous boost in both national economies and job growth.
Nowhere is this more currently evident than in China, Japan and South Korea.
China
China’s transportation sector accounts for about a fifth of the nation’s total energy consumption. But through the use of alternatively fueled vehicles, high-speed rail, and other options, China can create an average of 2 million jobs annually between now and 2020, according to an April 2011 Worldwatch Institute report.
