Earlier this year, I wrote a post for the UK political blog Left Foot Forward about how a lack of access on London’s public transport system would negatively affect disabled fans’ enjoyment of the Paralympic Games in 2012. Of course, this will also apply to the Olympic Games, as there should not be anything stopping disabled people being equally interested in those.
Lack of Accessibility in Transport Network
Now, a new report by the Greater London Authority (GLA), titled "Accessibility of the Transport Network," has found that one in 10 Londoners cannot access public transport because of mobility difficulties. This is unwelcome and worrying news, particularly with the Paralympic and Olympic Games now less than two years away.
The GLA investigation focused on the Tube, trains and buses, as these are the most popular modes of public transport in London. It attempted to find out whether current measures to improve the accessibility of the public transport network were meeting the needs of travellers with reduced mobility, as well as what would be required to make the system accessible to an increasing number of people with reduced mobility.
