Laidlaw Transportation Services

With the cost of oil rising and the knock-on effect on petrol/gas prices, more people are turning to public transport as an alternative way of commuting to work.

However, the transport companies have to tread a fine line between turning a profit and keeping up with passengers’ expectations of where, when and for how much they should be able to travel. To be truly effective, public transport should run a reliable service and undercut the cost of driving and parking costs in the area. But in some cases, the public won’t even express an interest in using a service until it is provided, which often means that it runs at a loss until word spreads of its effectiveness or convenience.

No Guaranteed Seats on Public Transport

In England, regular London train commuters pay several thousand pounds for their annual season tickets – and yet they are not even guaranteed a seat on these services, as demand is so high during peak times. Those on long bus journeys have been known routinely to sprawl across two seats, sometimes even putting their bag on the seat next to them, and go to sleep, denying later boarders a place to sit without disturbing those already in place. Many people on shorter journeys decide against waking a sleeping passenger and choose instead to stand for as long as necessary.
