The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been catching a lot of heat because of their Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) and very thorough pat-downs. While participating in detailed full-body scans is optional, many agree that the alternative full-body pat-downs are an uncomfortable alternative, and that airline passengers' Fourth Amendment right is being violated along with their bodies.
Aside from possibly ignored rights, what else could be in play in the collective American consciousness that is the cause of such distress? This article will explore the deeper meanings behind the objections to full-body scans and pat-downs in an attempt to bring more thought to why we react as we do, thereby helping one come to an informed decision on the matter.
Body Shame
The US suffers from a massive case of body shame. In a culture that worships muscles, flat stomachs, clear skin, and shakes heads at the high obesity rate, the public is forced to consume and reach for achieving the ideal body. The problem is that in reality there is no such thing as an ideal body, and a very small percentage of the population is believed to have it. The rest of the population is left with the idea that their bodies are imperfect and they are not good enough because of this. Very few people ever achieve happiness and contentment with their bodies.
