Traveling by train through Europe, it seems as if every small town has a working railway station. In America, many towns have made their old train stations into museums and visitor centers because it has been so many years since they have had train service.

Two such places in Florida are Fernandina Beach and Fort Myers. Fernandina's train service across the state to Cedar Key began in 1856. It was interrupted by the Civil War but resumed soon after, ending only when Cedar Key was wiped out by a hurricane in 1896.

Fernandina's picturesque red brick train depot is now the Amelia Island Visitors Center.

Fort Myers had passenger service from 1904 until 1971, when Amtrak took over America's railroads.
